How to edit and show final video

How to show video ?
Originally thinking of playing it on a Mac for assessment: so I needed to burn the video to DVD. Couldn't get it to loop on DVD. As it turned out I didn't need to: for the Degree show it can go on a film reel edited by Martin Thomas.
For assessment I will show retina photographs and have all my video work on a memory stick.

Continuing technical issues with Photoshop and Premiere

Learned how to make circle templates in Photoshop, save as PSD file, which could then be taken into Premiere and dragged over the top of a video.
Issues with size of template: larger one didn't work as its top and bottom were cut off.
Issues of re-sizing the templated videos to make them equal.
Learned how to play two or more videos at the same time in Premiere.
Learned how to crop each video to fit it in using safe margins to show the centre of the screen.
Also how to apply crop effect; not to whole movie but to each clip at a time.
Issues with the circle templates having bits cut out of them due to positioning: never really understood why...
Issues of sizing of the circle videos: smaller, larger or equal.
Applying cross dissolve and timing between each video.

Effects Mask; to apply an effect to a specific part of a video
Saving everything as Quicktime videos so can be seen on Macs.
Tried experimenting with layering videos but couldn't keep the circles clear.

Summary of my thinking and research with regard to final piece.

Triple image video experiment for final piece.

Decided to have two equal size circular videos playing simultaneously.next to each other. each of three images: two the same: the eye and the nit and two different: tongue and under-tongue. The duplicating and repeating images create a connection, a relationship between the separate videos: Am having problems with YouTube refusing to upload my final video . It's because each of the individual videos has already been uploaded singly to YouTube and it won't duplicate them.

Finalising choices for final video

Two circles of the same size, much better balance: communication between them:
Only a single image per video. Need to add more and make a sequence. Essential images are the eye, the nit and the two different tongues: Ear, hair and nose aren't strong enough and the association of nit and hair is too obvious.

Experiment with unequal circles: doesn't work, the balance is wrong. The nit's relative smallness doesn't need to be emphasised.
Conjunction of nit and unidentifiable flesh is good.

Tongue pieces for final video

Tongue template that I will use in my final piece: strong image. I have decided not to have an audio track, the silence emphasises the idea of communication and transference. Silent but very powerful. Nuanced, implied, not heard, not obvious.

Undertongue that will be used in my final video. These body parts are much the strongest.

Eye circle templates

Large circle template for eye, still needs to be closer up. Using the large circle template isn't workable in Premiere as they are too large and the tops and bottoms get cut off. I need perfect circles.

I re shot the eye much closer up, no eyelids or lashes, no gender, no specificity, just an eye, a perception. Works much better, much stronger.

undertonguesmalltemplate

Like the tongue videos, very strong and strange looking. Will use this in final video experiment.

undertonguenitequaladobe

Pairing of tongue and nit works: fleshy and disturbing though have to get size and position right.

undertonguenitequal

Pleased with this pairing.will use for final piece.

nosehairsmalltemplate

Decided not to use the head hair or nose hair videos as the juxtaposition with the head louse was too obvious.

nitlarge

Good strong focus on nit, can see the blood pulsing through its system. Will use this in final video.

niteyeundertongue

Managed to get the circles all perfect; experimenting with positioning and sizing,
Referencing planets, huge spaces, exteriors and yet also tiny, micro interiors. Duality of inside/outside/subject/object. Who lives in or on who or what.

I've decided that three images is too many: it needs to be two and tightly focused.

Experimenting with three images, technical  issues with spacing and decisions about size of each circle.

Nit too small, eye not close up enough.

Development of videos: square format to circular

Finally worked out how to apply a circle template made in Photoshop to a video in Premiere. Eventually realised I had to leave the background transparent, then could drag it over the whole length of a video and then the images would be focused within a circle. I made two different size circle templates and used the smaller as the larger was too large and had its top and bottom cut off in the final video.

Also had to learn how to crop videos so that I could play two or more side by side or in separate parts of the screen. Difficult as the video looks fine before it is saved then when it is played back the defects become obvious i.e. bits cut off etc. Very frustrating and time consuming.

First videos before the circle template: the square format doesn't work: not focused enough, diminishes their strength. Experimented with double image of nit, not successful: made it weaker rather than stronger.
Difficulties getting the two videos the same size, cropping them not that simple. They need to be in a circle format: need the focus.

Colour experiments: pretty but not working.

More retinas

In response to the feedback from the Fusion judges I am playing about with the idea of planets and the solar system. This fits with my ideas about connection to the universe and our place within it: we and the universe are composed of only 97 elements: the atoms that make up our physical presence originated in the stars. I would like to get photographic prints of these but again it's expensive.

New computer and Fusion submission

Finally got new computer system after many delays: it took a month during which time I completed the workshops for my Professional Practice Module. Premiere runs fine on this system thank goodness.

RUH Fusion- a collaboration between Bath Spa university and Bath hospital: art in healing, art and science etc.
I applied for this open submission exhibition and had my work accepted so took to framers; huge expense!!!! Below are the five images that were accepted and the feedback I was given :
Dear Jane,

I'm pleased to inform you that your proposal for FUSION has been accepted. The concept of making procedures into Art is definitely intriguing.

It was suggested you could push their abstract nature further so they become more planetary- The retina less explicit which is something you may want to consider. The concept of making images of procedures into Art is definitely intriguing and was picked up upon.

Any other questions please get in touch,

Best Wishes, Fiona

Formative feedback

Eye and finger nail scratching? Fork scratching on fabric? Or something soft that leaves a mark? Just read in all seriousness on Internet that lemons keep away the evil eye.......

Have decided not to make a headpiece or project onto human form: want to keep it really simple so just focused images in a relationship on a screen. How many and what size?

Computer problems and projection new ideas

My pc hard drive isn't coping with the task of running Premiere and keeps crashing. I took it to the tech shop but it's too old and small to be able to add any significant memory so I need a new one.. They are quoting me for a custom one specially to run Photoshop and Premiere. Will take at least two weeks for them to build it. So I have a forced delay to think about how to present my ideas.
I've had thoughts about the projection. And what I'm trying to say. Am thinking about communication and transference between people and how it fails or is stifled. Thinking about the Victorian prison ethos of silence and isolation and the hoods or headpieces they were forced to wear which prevented them from seeing their fellow inmates. Thinking about Amnesty International and prisoners the world over who are imprisoned for speaking out. Freedom of speech. Words and ideas of paramount importance. Miscommunication. Eyes and mouth. Vision and speech.
Am making a canvas hood or headpiece. To be worn over the head, and be projected onto, eye or tongue enlarged onto the face space or back of the head. And also projections onto the body. Onto the back or side? And film it.

Be subversive

Tutorial with Angie made me realise how unclear I am about what I'm trying to say. What is the relationship between ourselves and our universe? Exactly what is my take on it? I am trying to discombobulate,  to cause discomfort and unease. Things are never what they seem.
Think about the relationship or narrative between the images. I've been sequencing them but maybe I just need two separate that can be projected or shown next to each other and which speak to each other, have a dynamic.Angie spoke about a crying eye and a lemon for example, and the eye slicing episode in Chien dAndalou. The head louse and eye work together as does the lips and nit.
Things that aren't surreal as such but are subversive, not what you would expect and which create discomfort and provoke a visceral reaction.
Maybe use separate ways to show them grouped together. A Mac, an iPad, an iPhone. Or two or three images at once on one screen. Ask Martin how to do this, or John. Also try a vignette effect on the images. Take a screen grab of Premiere still, open in Photoshop, create layer the right size and make a transparent circle, ( save as PNG I think ?) and add to Premiere as second video. When played together there should be a central circle. Does layer have to be black?
Also maybe a projection and a real object? Either projected onto or shown beside.
Don't underestimate the audience. Be subtle.

What and why? Be careful, simple and eloquent.

Sequenced videos and software issues

Hair and skin ( no transition, bit quick, needs one)

Eye, lips and nosehair ( managed to get three together!) film dissolve transitions more subtle than cross dissolve.

Undertongue and eye: no transition, needs one)

Having big problems with Premiere essentials software. It keeps crashing. I have freed up more memory and defragged the hard drive however it still crashes. I've managed to make three new videos of two sequences each. I want to vary the images and have them possibly repeating and chasing each other through the three projections. Going to be harder than I thought. Timing and stuff.

Four simultaneous video experiment

I've just discovered how much easier it is to upload my videos from YouTube rather than from my computer files. And they can be played on any windows or apple products. These videos are part of an experiment in the MA building. I initially wanted a four walled space that could have a video on each wall, surrounding the viewer. My phenomenological sensory and physical  apparatus surrounding the viewer's likewise. Interior, exterior, body and mind.

Issues were finding enough projectors and laptops: I had to get two from Sion. And then finding enough connectors/adapters and extension leads. We set up initially with four projectors on four tables more or less the same height facing each wall of the space so each image could be projected to a large size. I then uploaded a QuickTime  video to each Mac laptop having originally saved them as AVI or MPEG, neither of which will play on a Mac.
I decided that the quality and resolution of the video wasn't as clear as I would like it to be when it was projected to a large size. And I didn't want a large space with relatively tiny projections within it. So I had  to consider a smaller set of projections. Also did they need to be separate or could they share the same wall space and communicate or interact with each other?

Steve found a projection screen about 6 feet wide by 8 feet tall, specifically designed to be projected onto from behind so the image is seen but not the projectors. The images come out right/left reversed like a mirror image and because the projectors can be closer the image quality is improved.

.

I tried using all four projectors on the screen but before I could document it one of the projectors overheated. I preferred the magic number of three anyway: four images looked too designed or pattern like. I had six videos to play with initially but decided that the head louse video didn't fit with the body parts: the colouring and picture quality was too different. I also had to swap one of the Mac laptops for my Samsung when one of the QuickTime videos refused to play on it.

I experimented with two tongue sequences, the eye, lips and nose hair. Two tongues together was too much. The nose hair was too static.
I liked the eye rolling around and looking at the other images.

Future development: I would like to try having a repeating sequence that moves from one video to the next, moving round the screen. Also maybe having three simultaneous eyes looking at each other, lips  talking to each other......

Also think about size of each image. Don't think I want them all the same, especially if having same images in each video. Different sizes is better, like having differing viewpoints.
Do I need ear and nose? Think not because they are too static and also communication is strong in sight and speech. thinking visually and orally back to prehistory. Although obviously you need to hear speech......
And the big question is do I add audio?
Will experiment.........

Retina developments

Used Photoshop unsharp mask and sharpen to play with eye colour. I like the depth of colour. First effort saved then realised the bottom layer is showing. Had to enlarge the middle eye layer to cover the area. Apply this sharpening to other eye jpegs.
On second thoughts I quite like the white section of background and the ghostly eye overlap. Do more playing with these. Can really see the difference between the two microscope eye images. Try overlapping the coloured eye with the white background. Save each one as a PSD for further editing. Work in series.

With the detail images try sharpening the eye section to see what happens. Is it better fuzzy or clear? Different effect.

These two above are details of an image I submitted to an exhibition. I like the full coverage of the canvas.

Phyllida Barlow and Richard Tuttle

Barlow: large scale installations in Hauser and Wirth, arranged so you can either walk through the space  or are excluded from a space and can only stand outside and gaze in. Interesting manipulation of space and viewer  and objects within it. Simple and quite crude materials and making.

Phenomenology and James Turrell

Photo: Mike NewmanSkyspace, Thremenheere, Cornwall

By phenomenological definition, space is a medium of communication, of mediation and transference of idea and perception.  Heidegger thought that space had a physical presence; it is a material with which we interact and that our physical beings connect or radiate with the universe and thus our physical boundaries do not mark the end of our selves but rather the beginnings of our interaction with the world. In this sense, in Turrell’s work, the boundaries between subject and object, the constructs that scientists and philosophers have created to explain ourselves and our place in the universe become irrelevant as we glimpse the possibility of a different way of seeing, of perceiving beyond these ingrained constructs.

Video progression

Do I want to have single images on a loop as separate videos. or sequence images into plural videos. Move in one video from mouth to eye to ear to nose for example. Considering senses together.

Also shall I try a sequence of retinal images and eye images?
Also do more retinal images for print. Colour and b and w.

Lindsey Seers installation ideas

Lovely, flowing,, circular shape repeated, religious symbolism, a sense of moving through, sequence of apparently unconnected images. Colour and tones beautiful and rich.
At Hayward gallery, also sculptural objects, large and somehow empty.
Association and duality of solid and transcendent. What is the relationship between the body of the viewer and the mind of the artist?

Julio le Parc and Gavin Turk installation ideas

Julio Le Parc, Sackler Gallery, Hyde Park
Light installations in  very small spaces. Made them feel like circus side shows. Would like to have seen them individually in a large space. One interesting one made of closely spaced hanging mirrors that you walked through. Expected to feel claustrophobic but was strangely spacious. All you could see was yourself and countless moving reflections of other people in there too.

Loved this one; looked like water running up hill.Reminded me of Mira Schendel exhibition at Tate Modern only she had much more space and class.
Having problems uploading the video I took. Stupid google+ so had to nick one from youtube.

Current exhibitions
Gavin Turk: We Are One
8 November 2014 - 8 February 2015

Gavin Turk's latest exhibition brings together many of his neon works, the signature pieces he made between 1995 and 2013 and which evidence the evolution of his practice, quite literally, in lights; their glow, suitably enough for Turk, has the aura of consumer fetish, celebrity and glamour. Turk often co-opts and transforms original meaning and many of his neon works turn everyday objects into luminous symbols. Hence a banana and a lobster channel the spirit of Warhol and Duchamp, in order to create Turk's own-brand logos. Visually reduced to minimal typographies, other works offer signs of communication in its simplest form: a seeing eye, a flickering flame, primordial hieroglyphs, with their ancient mysteries and secrets, evolved to modern day usage. A red star recalls Turk's 'Che Guevara' series and a red Maltese cross alludes to Yves Klein's interest in the Order of St John. Turk wore the Maltese cross when he married recently, in a ceremony that was a partial re-enactment of Klein's own wedding. Moreover each point of the Maltese cross represents the eight lands of origin, the origin of languages, and the values of truth, sincerity and faith.

I am interested in the quality and power of light and the role it plays in perception. How our eyes and brain process the light photons and convert them chemically into electrical impulses which are transferred to the brain via the optic nerve and somehow shapes, colours, objects and ideas are seen and understood.
Light is energy and it can be so powerful that it hurts the eye.
I'm not so interested in the figurative objects that Turk uses though I appreciate the aim of reappraising ordinary objects. Goes with my ideas about the ambiguity of what you see in my videos.

Perceptual Reality and the retina

The retina is actually a part of the brain that is isolated to facilitate the conversion of patterns of light into neuronal signals. These signals are processed by different parts of the brain. The perception of objects and the totality of the visual scene is accomplished by the visual Association Cortex.
